Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
I heard Lycheas enter the house, and called out that we were in the back room. I got up to welcome him home.

“Mother sent me home with supplies.”

“Oh good, I wasn’t able to get much this afternoon. Hope it’s ok, Lepti has been drooling over your books. I need to get dinner started. Can I trust the two of you to behave for a few moments?”

As I left, Lycheas was digging through a box of books.

“Here, this was one of my favorites. I can’t remember how many times I read it.”

“Oh, our mother used to read this one to me when I was little.”

And the big man scores. I smiled as I readied everything for the oven. Those two might just get along after all. Not even wanting to try and make bread, I decided on some rolls. It was the simplest recipe mother had taught me after she realized my slight limitation when it came to baking. Thankfully Lycheas had brought home a larger variety of herbs and other items. I even managed to put together something for dessert with the fruit he brought back.

Lepti came running into the kitchen to show me the book Lycheas had given her.

“Can you believe it! It’s the same book mother used to read me. Lycheas said I could borrow it.” She ran back to the other room to put the book in her pack.

Lycheas lounged against the kitchen counter.

“I guess she’s not quite so bad after all.”

“Thank you, the book worked wonders.”

“That was pure luck. Smells wonderful in here.”

“That doesn’t mean it will taste good, I helped get things ready.” Lepti said when she returned.

“You two can set the table. It won’t be done any faster, and I won’t be any happier, with the two of you under foot while I cook.”

“Yes ma’am.” Lycheas started handing plates to Lepticis.

I just can’t stand people who hover around a kitchen doing nothing, even though I don’t cook that often.

“What do we have left to drink?”

“Water and that stuff from the other night.”

“Oh, well then why don’t Lepti and I go get something?”

“Go where?” She asked.

“You and I are off on a quest for liquid refreshment to go with dinner tonight. And get out of the way before she finds something else for us to do.”

She jumped up and clapped her hands, beating Lycheas to the door.

“Better hurry, everything is almost ready.” I called after them.

They returned shortly, with more than just beverages. Lepti was waving around a ghastly looking little doll, with an extra one she gave to me.

“There’s a celebration going on across the lands. Fireworks and everything! Lycheas said we could go tomorrow and get some to set off ourselves.” She beamed at me.

“Did he now?”

“Can’t miss out on the fun now can we?” He grinned.

“Can we eat now? I’m starving.” Lepti leapt into one of the chairs at the table.

Lycheas winced slightly hearing the legs groan, he hadn’t finished repairing everything yet. He helped me carry everything over to the table, and couldn’t find enough praise over the meal. I eyed him a bit suspiciously and he stopped a moment.

“It really is good. Don’t have to look at me like that.” He muttered, refilling my wine glass.

“Theeth are mother’s rolls aren’t they?” Lepti said, her mouth full.

“Yes, and try not to talk after you take a mouthful of food please.”

“Thowwy.”

I couldn’t help but smile. They helped clean up after we were done, and we sat around talking until Lepti began to yawn.

“Looks like we better get you back to Mama’s.” Lycheas said.

“I’m not tired.” Lepti said stubbornly, trying to hide the next yawn.

“Well I am, and there’s nowhere for you to sleep in this house. Come on, we’ll walk you back.” I said, helping her up from her chair.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

The clattering of pots, followed by a crash and some choice words pulled me from my slumber the next morning. I got up to see what the commotion was. Lycheas was busy cleaning up the remains of the glasses that had decided it was their time to go.

“What in the world are you doing?” I asked him, my voice still heavy with sleep.

“Good morning beautiful. I was trying to make something to eat and not wake you up. I have to be over at the guild hall to give a report soon.” He cursed again as one of the pieces of glass cut into his hand.

“I’ll teach you the finer art of being quiet in the kitchen some other time.” I muttered returning with a bandage.

I dusted the wound with my low healing skills, and gently wrapped his hand. Fishing out the broom, I helped him gather up the rest of the mess.

“Go get ready, I’ll fix the food.”

“You don’t have to love, go back to sleep.”

“I’m awake now, that would be rather pointless at the moment anyways.” I pulled out some of the leftovers from the night before. They’d have to do on short notice. “Do I need to go with you this morning?”

“While I’d love the company, I don’t think you will. Shouldn’t take me too long. Hopefully they won’t have anything else for me today.”

He sat at the table and wolfed down a few bites of food. Giving me a quick kiss, he dashed out the door. I cleaned everything up and decided it might be a good idea to go back to bed. Burrowing back under the covers, I lay there half asleep. Things were settling down again, this could be a wonderful life. Leptictis was here, safe, and where I could keep an eye on her. She had grown a little over that trek to find me, but she was still very much a child. A smile came to my face as I realized there were people out there who could say the same for me. Certainly there weren’t many seasons to be seen on my face, but I had seen and experienced more than most others around me. Even Lycheas felt young to me at times, I wondered if he’d even left Faydwer yet.

The seed to wander awoke again, as the blooms do in lands of cold and ice when the sun warms them briefly. Part of me felt it wanted to leave then and there and never look back. I quickly dismissed these feelings, trying to bury them again. I could not leave all this, all that might be mine someday. But perhaps a small journey soon would help. I got up as I heard Lycheas enter the house, accompanied by Lepti. One can never escape family.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

We gathered in a clearing close to the city that evening to partake in the celebration. Mama Roe had put together a wonderful picnic, and Lepti spent most of the evening entertaining Arellat and Rukal’s two boys. There were a few extra guards and other overseers on duty, keeping a wary eye out for the one gnomish creation that might go awry. It was wonderful to see the city gathered together, knowing others were doing the same across the lands. A group of veteran adventurers were regaling young trainees with stories of their triumphs over the skeleton hoards that had been cropping up in places. I could only shudder, the walking undead and I did not get along.

I sat quietly watching everything. In a few days the celebration would be over, and everyone would go back to their normal activities. Some would forget this sense of community as soon as they woke up the next morning, some had never had it. Others would want to carry on a while longer, and as the older wiser ones would say, everything would find its balance in the world. Still I felt the twitching in my feet, wanting to see other places again. This feeling must have found its way to my face, as I caught Lycheas giving me strange looks throughout the evening. He seemed a little withdrawn as we made our way back to the house.

“You might as well tell me what’s on your mind.” I prodded gently.

“Is it that obvious?” He sat on the steps in front of the door. “You just seemed different tonight. Even though you were right next to me, it felt as if you weren’t.”

How do you tell someone you’ve been fighting a growing urge to leave for no apparent reason?

“Everything here is wonderful. I’ve just…well, I wandered for so long, it’s hard to suddenly stop.”

“You…You want to leave, again?” He stiffened slightly.

“I don’t want to leave, I just want to travel again. Visit Irontoe’s Pub. Sit on the docks with a good brew and a fishing pole. I’d like to see parts of Luclin again, even though I hate that method of travel. I haven’t even been to this Plane of Knowledge everyone keeps talking about.” I nudged him and smiled. “I’d enjoy it even more if someone came with me.”

He almost collapsed with relief.

“What? You thought I…”

“No! Well, I mean, it…. Actually, you could use a trip to the bazaar, start looking for another sword.” He grinned.

“Perhaps there is something to traveling alone.” I muttered.

“I wasn’t being mean! I’d even get you one, but the furniture for the house stole all my coin.”

“I don’t need you to provide for me Lycheas, I am a grown woman.”

“But, isn’t that supposed to be my job?”

“You’ve provided yourself and a house. I’m quite capable of fending for myself in other matters.”

“You cook. You can out track me.” He was never going to let me live that one down, and he’d been the one to suggest the stupid ‘contest’ in the first place. “You’re probably going to become a better instructor than me soon. All that will be left is for me to sit around here and get fat while I show off my broken down house and a beautiful woman.”

“You most certainly will not be doing that. I am not a better instructor than you, I just do things differently. And I didn’t win that tracking thing by much.”

He laughed.

“I don’t think I can get out of my duties right away, I’ll have to talk with the masters first.”

“I never said we had to leave first thing in the morning. Besides, I’ll need a few days to try and fill my coin purse.” I shivered. “Can we finish this inside? It’s chilly and this step is no longer comfortable.”

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
I made myself ready the next morning, having decided to take a short trip to Steamfront. I’d also had to spend part of the morning convincing Lycheas I would be fine. I did know my way around, and the safe short cut through the darker part of the forest. A slight change of scenery was definitely in order.

As always, the rain paid its daily visit, but the skies had cleared by the time I reached the homeland of the gnomes. I took my time looking about, and had a grand time thinning out the local population of kobolds. Loaded down with furs and other items, I finally turned towards home again as the sun slowly set the sky ablaze before disappearing. Lycheas would undoubtedly be pacing the floor, worried I wasn’t home yet. Just as long as he didn’t decided to come looking for me.

Managing to catch a merchant before they closed for the night, I was surprised by what he offered me for the furs. I would have to make a few more hunting trips. Kobolds were my new best friends. Lycheas was waiting for me at the door. He hugged me, but quickly pulled away wrinkling his nose.

“First you stink of orc, and now kobold. Do you ever not do that when you hunt?”

“You’ve obviously not hunted them much. Kobolds smell no matter what you do.” I headed off to the bath.

He had dinner waiting when I returned. His dislike of smelly kobolds changed a bit when I mentioned it was a little profitable.

“I never realized that. Course when mother had me staying with her, I didn’t have to worry about having more than just a few coins for a night at the tavern.” He got up for a fresh bottle of wine. “Some foraged materials sell pretty good as well. Mother always tries to remind me of that, but I usually end up eating everything I find.”

“That’s why you take some rations with you when you travel.”

“Drink your wine.”

“Have you talked with the masters yet?” I smiled at him over my glass.

“Yes, and they released me from everything this morning.” He grumped. “It’s like they want to get rid of me or something. I’ve been away a few times.”

“It’s probably me. They want you to make sure I don’t run off again.”

“You might be right. Master Trueshot even gave me a small bag of coins to help pay for inns along the way. That was after he said it was good I was getting away for a while.”

“Just how long has it been since you left the forest?”

“A few seasons.” He replied. “Oh yeah, mother said we have to come over for dinner before we go.”

I started to gather up the dishes and he promptly pushed me back down in the chair.

“You just sit there and relax. I didn’t do much today.”

“Did you see Lepti today?”

“Yes, she was complaining about her armor quest. I introduced her to a couple young rangers working on theirs, and that seemed to help.”

“Only if one of them was a cute boy.”

“Well, I’m no judge on that, but she did seem rather interested in one of them.”

“That’s just what we need. You couldn’t have found her some nice young girls to hunt with?”

“There weren’t any around when I ran into her. I don’t know all the trainees out there.”

I poured myself another glass of wine. Leptictis and boys had always been an interesting combination. It had always amazed me how she seemed a different person around them. I’d probably never quite understand it.

“I was thinking, and if you like, we could go through the Plane of Knowledge first. Since that’s at least one place I’ve been where you haven’t. I think you’ll find the traveling is a little easier than using the Luclin portal at the spires.”

“What’s it like?”

“It’s an interesting place. Usually pretty crowded with people. There are stones that take you just about anywhere you want to go in the blink of an eye.”

“Seems that takes the fun out of traveling.”

“What do you mean?”

“Getting to your destination is half the fun.”

“I think you’ll like it after you get used to it. What used to take days is now just a brief moment in time.”

“And yet you still haven’t been away from Kelethin that much?”

“You’re in trouble now woman.”

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
I woke early the next morning, and got ready without breaking anything or waking the other member of the household. The air was crisp and fresh, thankfully no rain yet. Slowly making my way through the city, I thought I had managed to sneak out for a morning stroll. Someone was shouting my name out for all around to hear, and I was nearly knocked off the bridge as Leptictis rushed over to me.

“There you are! Trying to sneak away again?”

“No.” I managed to steady the two of us. “I was hoping for a quite morning walk.”

“Bah, that’s no fun.” She took a step back, preening as it were. “Well, how do I look?”

She had managed to complete a couple pieces from her armor quest. She looked slightly comical with two pieces of green tinged leather mixed in with a set from Arellat. I had to quickly smother the laugh bubbling up.

“You were busy yesterday.”

“I had so much fun! Lycheas introduced me to a couple ranger trainees, and the three of us spent almost the whole day out hunting. I never knew it could be so much fun! It’s never like that when I go hunting with you.”

“That’s because you complain the whole time if I take you along, and I have to do all the work.”

“You’re the older one.”

I hoped she didn’t see me rolling my eyes while taking a firm grip on my tongue between my teeth.

“Oh, there’s my friends. C’mon, I want you to meet them.”

There wasn’t much room for me to object, as she grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the next platform. One of the young boys looked like an animal caught in a trap, the other had a bemused grin on his face. There was promise for one of them at least.

“Sallacious! Kalutam! I want you to meet my sister. This is Mirtoba.”

Kalutam, the one looking for escape when there was none from Lepti, seemed rather spindly and awkward. His short blonde hair stuck out at odd points, and he fidgeted with it constantly. Sallacious was obviously older, and carried himself rather well. I didn’t hear Lepti complaining about long hair this time around. Oh what fun Lycheas and I could have with this.

“It is an honor to meet you. We heard quite a lot about you yesterday.”

I glanced at Lepti who ducked her head, blushing slightly.

“Thank you for assisting my sister. Otherwise she would have still been trying to coerce me into doing it.”

“I would not!” She squealed, blushing deeper. “We’re still going hunting again today aren’t we?”

“Yes.” Sallacious nodded. “I have a couple tasks to tend to for the masters this morning, but we can meet at the third lift after lessons.”

“Lessons! Oh no, I forgot! I’m late.”

Lepti turned and dashed back across the bridge. I winced as she narrowly avoided colliding with a merchant heading to their booth.

“She only had good things to say about you, if that will help any.”

“Oh, I’m used to her by now.” I turned back to Sallacious and smiled.

“We’ll take good care of her.” He nodded and continued on his way.

I took that to mean he’d take care of her. I still had my doubts about Kalutam. Would have to remember to ask Lycheas about that one when I returned. I made my way to the lift, and set out to see if I could find any fresh herbs.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

Lycheas was still asleep when I returned to the house. I started on the morning meal, knowing that like most men, the aroma of cooking would bring him back to the living. It had always worked for my mother. He finally emerged when everything was almost ready.

“How long have you been up?” He mumbled before collapsing again at the table.

“Long enough to see Lepti and meet her new friends, gather some cooking supplies, and fix a meal.” I set a mug of tea in front of him.

“I didn’t even hear you leave the house.”

“I’ll teach you that skill someday.”

I think he growled at me, but I was too busy keeping an eye on the biscuits so they didn’t burn. Our meal was quiet, and only a few crumbs remained after he was done attacking everything. We sat there a moment,  I didn’t feel like cleaning up just yet.

“So, what do you know about those two boys you tormented by introducing them to Lepti?”

“Which two?”

“Sallacious and Kalutam.”

“Oh, Sallacious isn’t too bad. He might actually turn out decent. We’re still not all that sure about Kalutam. He’s been going through this awkward phase for a while now. He’s a bright kid, just not good with other people.”

“You should have seen him this morning when she spotted them. Poor Kalutam looked like a cornered rabbit. Not sure Lepti was the best thing to subject him to.”

“They’ll be fine. Usually we pair them up with someone on the same level, but Kalutam seems to do better right now with a slightly older student.” He stood and stretched. “Better get things cleaned up, we have a trip to prepare for.”

“Oh? And when were you planning on us leaving?”

“Tomorrow.”

“How nice of you to let me know.”

He only grinned at me before heading off to change clothes. I had hoped to get in a couple more hunting trips before we left.

We spent the rest of the day gathering what we’d need. I lost track of how many times I had to tell Lycheas that we didn’t need to take every little thing. A couple sets of clothes, some travel rations, and a few odds and ends were more than enough. It was like he forgot we could gather our own food and water if need be. This wasn’t an extended trip to uninhabited lands.

That evening we joined everyone at Mama Roe’s for dinner. Lycheas got a few jabs in on Lepti about young boys with long hair. She glowered at him and muttered something about scissors. Mama Roe and Arellat both gave us a list of things for us to try and find for them, and the boys pulled Lycheas aside before we left to see if he could find another lamp to replace the one they’d broken. It was rather late before we finally managed to get away.

“I forgot my nephews could actually be cute kids. They pooled their money together, just a few gold pieces, for that new lamp.”

“I thought we were never going to get away. Let’s hope your mother and Arellat aren’t knocking on the door in the morning to add anything else to those lists.” I collapsed on the bed.

“We could sneak out of here tonight, then we wouldn’t be here for them to wake up.”

“I am not moving.” I said as I burrowed under the covers. “Now be quiet and go to sleep.”

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
The only thing that woke us the next morning were the birds chattering away outside the window. No last minute supply lists being delivered, no nothing. I stretched leisurely and nudged Lycheas. He mumbled something and flopped an arm over me.

“Get off me.” I muttered.

“You always wake up so early?”

“It’s not that early.” I pushed him off the bed.

“What was that for?”

“I did tell you to get off me.” I said lightly, stepping over him to gather my clothes.

“Could have been nicer about it.” He grumped into the kitchen. “I’m fixing myself food, you get to fend for yourself.”

I just smiled and shook my head. Gathering a few last things, I took my packs out and set them by the door. When I came back from the bath, two places were set at the table, and there was more than enough food. I smiled inwardly, he was a softy at times.

“I thought you said I had to fend for myself.”

He just grunted around a mouthful of food. I grinned and we finished our meal in silence. I cleaned up while he gathered his gear. And he had wondered why I’d packed the night before. Finally we were ready and set off on this grand adventure he had planned. I half expected someone to stop us for something on our way through the city, but we made it to the nearest lift with no trouble. Lycheas had remained silent since breakfast. I hadn’t pushed him that hard. Halfway down the path he stopped and turned to me.

“Did we forget anything?” He asked.

“If we did, it’s too late now. I’m not going back.”

“You always like this when you travel?”

“If I can’t find it along the way, it wasn’t that important in the first place.”

“Guess that makes some sort of sense.” He smiled and kissed my cheek. “Now, the Knowledge Books are a little different than what you’re used to.”

I raised an eyebrow and said nothing. I’d believe it when it happened…and it didn’t make me roll-over-dead sick. Lycheas took my hand as we approached the book. He smiled gently and placed my hand on the carved pages. Warmth spread through my limbs, then came the stomach turning blackness. I hate magical means of travel, I really do.

The darkness was still there, until I realized I’d had my eyes shut tight. My head was still spinning slightly, and I thought I heard my name called out from somewhere. Blinking slowly, I straightened and turned. Lycheas was giving me a concerned look. I tried to smile, but my head felt like and orc drum so it looked more like a snarl.

“You ok?” He gently took my arm.

“I think so, as soon as the room stops spinning.” I let him lead me towards a shallow gazing pool and sat gingerly on the steps.

“Guess you weren’t lying when you said porting didn’t agree with you.”

“Really? This isn’t so bad, if the dizziness ever goes away.” I laughed, realizing too late that I shouldn’t have.

“It isn’t as bad after you’ve gone through a few times. Sure better than those boats.”

“But I don’t get seasick.”

“Oh, well, hope you don’t ever have to use the translocator gnomes.”

I groaned. Things must have changed after my trip back home. And I really had no reason to like boats that much anyway. Quickly burying those memories, I dug a water flask out of my pack. My surroundings were no longer spinning around me, but I had one hell of a headache brewing. I gently rubbed at my temples, trying to think straight enough to cast healing on myself. After watching me fail miserably, Lycheas shook his head and did it for me.

“That help any?”

“Doesn’t hurt as bad now. Thank you.” Closing my pack up, I got up from the steps slowly.

“Well, you up for playing tourist?”

“Just don’t move too fast. We aren’t going through one of those again soon are we?”

“And have you hate me by the end of the day? No, we haven’t decided on our next destination yet anyways.”

He offered me his arm and we set off.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
The Plane of Knowledge was truly an amazing site. Not even in my various travels through the lands had I seen so many people, so many different people, gathered in one place. Age old animosities still existed, as I caught Lycheas giving the back of some dark elf’s head a nasty glance. I had to wonder what kept everyone from breaking out in some great last battle.

“The Gods have enchantments in place to keep this place peaceful.” Lycheas said, quickly side stepping to avoid a very determined looking group of dwarves.

There was a large gathering, and quite a commotion going on ahead of us. A group of people were stranded outside a large building where two Ogres were blocking the entrance. They seemed to be enjoying themselves, much to the chagrin of those trying to get in or out.

“That’s one of the banks.” He muttered in my ear, quickly moving on.

I was grateful for that. The amount of people was quickly overloading any sort of reason I had, and I felt that headache trying to return. I followed Lycheas through a small building and across a large stone bridge. I had visited many libraries, but nothing like what greeted my eyes when we entered. A person could spend a few lifetimes and still not be able to read them all. The calm quiet was welcomed after everything else we’d walked past. Lycheas left me to wander on my own while he went to see on a few spells for Rukal.

As I drifted through the shelves, I realized just how badly I needed to brush up some of my language skills. I couldn’t make out half the titles on those books. Lycheas came up from behind, a confused look on his face.

“What are you doing looking at books in dark speech?”

“I understand enough to read some of the titles, and parts of others. I wasn’t really paying attention to where I was.”

“That’s more than I understand.”

“It’s easier than lizardman.”

He just shook his head and turned to leave. I followed reluctantly, not quite ready for the crowds or the noise again. Lycheas paused before we went back over the bridge to dig out the lists from Mama Roe and Arellat.

“Arellat wants spiderling silks.”

“We should head to Freeport then.”

He gave me a confused look.
“The Common lands are crawling with plenty of spiders.”

“I know that, she gave us money to go to the bazaar.”

“That’s no fun.”

“You have a strange idea of fun.”

“I have an excellent idea of fun, it just doesn’t involve spending days searching through another crowded noisy place for things you can very well gather yourself.”

I suddenly found myself in that defiant, hands on your hips pose. Lycheas took a couple steps back and raised his hands in protest.

“Don’t hurt me. I don’t like spiders, no matter what size they are.”

“You big baby, they’re very easy to kill.”

“That, my lady, is beside the point.”

“It’s precisely the point. If you don’t like them, you should get a great deal of satisfaction in killing them.”

“But then I get spider guts all over me. And come back looking like you after you’ve been out hunting.”

He was trying not to laugh, but his face fell as my eyes narrowed. It was so hard not to smile.

“I’m not going to win this one am I?”

“No, you’re not going to win this one.”

He sighed and dramatically drooped his shoulders.

“Freeport it is then.”

I smiled and engulfed him in a hug, planting a sloppy kiss on his cheek. He gave me a bemused grin.

“Guess I’ll have to let you win things more often.”

I just grinned.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
We made our way to the Freeport stone. I took a deep breath and gritted my teeth before going through that torture all over again. The dizziness and headache waiting on the other side didn’t seem quite so bad now that I knew what to expect. I’m sure somewhere there was the faint glimmer of hope that I could actually get used to this form of travel after some time, but the pain was too much right then. Lycheas cast healing on me again, making things more bearable.

He slowly led me out of the tunnel we had appeared in and towards the city. Hopefully we’d be able to find a room at one of the inns. The second innkeeper we spoke to grudgingly admitted he had one available, but seemed to brighten a little when I spoke of my fond memories hunting orcs around the city. My dislike for orcs knows no bounds.

It felt good to finally leave our packs behind. I was used to carrying them, but a person learns to take advantage of any opportunity to not lug their packs around. We went down to the common room, but had missed the mid-day meal. The cook was nice enough to give us some bread and cheese, and promised a great feast that evening. Thanking her, we decided to wander through the city.

I considered stocking up on small lanterns and seeing if I could track down Jyle Windshot for some treant wood, but figured I’d save that for another trip. Didn’t really want to face failing to make that damned bow again just yet. Let alone making the trip to gather kiola nuts. No, I’d keep my victory over the spider hunting.

Lycheas caught me trying to stifle a yawn, and he slowly steered us back towards the inn. We were a little early for the evening meal yet, but one of the serving girls brought us a couple pints and some fresh bread still warm from the oven. I must have looked like wormed over death, she looked at me rather strangely when she finally brought our meals out.

“You feeling ok there ma’am?”

“I’m just a little tired. Thank you.”

She didn’t appear to believe me, but other travelers were beginning to arrive, so she scurried off to take more orders. I turned to Lycheas.

“Do I really look that bad?”

“Why do you women always ask men questions like that? Answering is detrimental to our health.”

“It’ll hurt more if you don’t.” I grumbled.

“You look like you’re about ready to fall asleep on your plate.”

“The mashed roots have been looking pretty comfortable for the past few minutes.”
“Come on, let’s get you upstairs.” Lycheas chuckled and helped me up from the table.

I’m sure a few of the other patrons there thought I was drunk, the way he escorted me from the room. I hadn’t even finished that pint of ale. What a waste. If Lycheas hadn’t been there, I most certainly would have just fallen across the bed with my armor still on.

“I hate porting.” I whined.

“I know, go to sleep.”

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
My head was still a little fuzzy feeling when I woke the next morning, and the rest of me felt like I’d been trampled by a hundred orcs or so. It took me a while to realize Lycheas wasn’t in the room. That seemed odd, as I usually woke before he did. I heard the door open, and slowly turned my head.

“Finally awake?” Lycheas leaned over and smiled at me.

“How long have you been up?” I managed to croak.

“Not too long.”

“Liar.”

“Well, see if I get you anything to eat in the morning next time.”

I managed to sit up slightly, trying to ignore the groaning ache from my joints. Lycheas presented me with a small plate with fruit and cheese, and some cold tea.

“Sorry about the tea, I figured you needed the sleep more.”

“Thank you.”

I ate slowly, while he puttered around the room. It was mid-morning, the latest I’d slept for a while. Finishing my food, I decided it was time to try and move. Part of me just wanted to stay in bed all day, but that wouldn’t help anything. Planting both feet on the floor, I took one look at my armor before digging a set of leathers out of my pack. Somehow I didn’t feel like trying to wrangle my way into metal clothing.

“You’re wearing that?”

“We’re only killing spiders, unless you had something else in mind.”

“Don’t moan and groan when they bite you.”

I gave him a pointed look. Men.

“Since when have I griped about anything other than porting as a means of travel? We’re not new trainees, I would certainly hope we can kill little spiders before they get the chance.”

“Little? Those things are the size of large rats.”

“Which is more disturbing? Oversized spiders, or overgrown rodents?”

“Both, to tell you the truth.”

Laughing, we made our way downstairs and out towards the city gates. Talk about overgrown rodents, the area outside the city seemed over run with them. More than I remembered from my last trip to Freeport. It was a short walk to the borders of the Common Lands. They certainly deserved the name, there was nothing spectacular about them.

“So, we’re just after silks then?” I asked Lycheas.

He pulled the list out. “Looks like mother wants some snake eggs. Why is it always from something poisonous?”

I just smiled and shook my head. There were a few young adventurers about, so we’d have to watch we didn’t step on anyone’s toes.

“Quit complaining. Fresh air and exercise will do you some good.”

“I can think of better things to do on that end.” He muttered.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
Two young elves sat outside the ranger’s hall, their backs to one of the large trees supporting the city. The young man was concentrating hard over a fletching kit, the girl next to him watching intently. She waited for him to finish the arrow he was working on.

“It doesn’t bother you that I’m watching does it?” She asked quietly.

He set the finished arrow aside and smiled at her. “No, as long as you’re not talking at me while I’m trying to work.”

“I learned that lesson real quick watching Mirt. She said she’ll make me a bow when she gets back.” She leaned back a moment, her eyes moving to the door of the guild hall. “Wonder how Kalutam is doing.”

“He’s doing fine.”

“Has to be doing better than I did yesterday.”

“You didn’t do that bad Lepti.”

“I failed all but two of my tests. How is that not so bad?” She sulked.

“You could have failed all of them.”

“Who asked you anyway?” She got up in a huff and walked away.

Sallacious smiled. It had been an interesting week since Lycheas had introduced him to Leptictis. She was most certainly a handful. Running hot and cold faster than the weather, she kept both he and their partner Kalutam on their toes. When they’d first met, he’d thought her a flighty little girl, but she had slowly been proving him wrong. It still amazed him that this girl, with her dark hair and steady golden eyes, had taken it upon herself to venture far and wide in search of her sister. He turned back to his fletching efforts.

Leptictis made her way back and sat down next to him again. Her mood lightened a little knowing how Lycheas would never stop teasing her about boys with long hair. Sallacious’ hair was lighter than his, but she loved his violet tinged eyes more. Mirtoba would probably roll her eyes, but that was nothing new. She waited for him to finish another arrow.

“Sorry about that. I’m not mad at you.”

“I know. Don’t worry, we’ll help you practice more.”

Their attention was diverted as the doors opened and Kalutam walked out. They both stood and waited for his news.

“I don’t think I did so well.” He spoke slowly and quietly.

“You had to do better than me.” Leptictis smiled at him. “You’re a much better student than I am.”

Kalutam had changed a little since she’d first met him. He’d been so nervous around her he wouldn’t talk at all, and always seemed like he’d been wanting to run away. Now, he opened up a little more, and they’d actually gotten him to laugh a couple of times. Even Sallacious had to admit she’d been a good influence on their friend. He was still shy and withdrawn around others, but not as bad as before.

“Shouldn’t be too bad.” Sallacious said, gathering his fletching materials.

“Says who, mister ‘I passed all of mine with room to spare’.” Leptictis stuck her tongue out at him. She took a gentle grip on Kalutam’s arm. “C’mon. Lets go see if Mama Roe has any goodies baked.”

“Do I get to come too?” Sallacious asked, feigning sadness.

“I’ll think about it.” She said as she led Kalutam away.

“I’ll catch up, I need to leave this stuff at the bank.”

“We’ll wait for you.” Kalutam said.

“Traitor.” Leptictis mumbled.

Sallacious and Kalutam shared a small smile with each other. This was becoming regular banter between the three of them now. The prospect of sneaking something from Mama Roe’s kitchen brightened the rest of the day considerably. As long as they could keep Leptictis from moping about her sister being gone again, they’d do just fine.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
I snuggled in close as Lycheas wrapped his arms around me. We’d spent all day hunting spiders and snakes, and had managed to get a couple small bags worth of each. He was still moaning and groaning about falling out of a tree. I had told him it wasn’t a good idea climbing up there in the first place.

“You’re not going to tell anyone I fell out of a tree, right?”

“Of course not. Besides, who would believe a wood elf falling out of a tree?” I laughed. “And I did tell you it wasn’t a good idea at the time.”

“But there was one last snake up there.”

“I told you to wait for it to come down.”

“So what should we do tomorrow?” He was trying to change the subject.

“I say we stock up on beer, get ourselves a couple fishing poles, and spend the day on the docks.”

“That sounds pretty boring.”

“Least there won’t be any trees around.”

“You’re in for it now.”

*******************************************

Leptictis stood in the kitchen, glumly helping with the evenings chores. Roeal gave her an exasperated look.

“Child, they’ll be back soon.”

“I know.” The girl sighed. “I just hate being left behind again.”

“You’ll understand soon enough about people wanting time away alone.”

Leptictis blushed. Mama Roe had that effect on people. She hardly ever kept anything back when she had something to say. When they were finished cleaning up, they went outside to rest in the coolness of the evening.

“Mirtoba said you knew our mother.” Leptictis stated quietly.

Roeal took a moment before answering. It was hard to think back on what had happened.

“Yes, we were friends.”

“She doesn’t like to talk about our parents, and I was too little to understand or remember much. I remember mother always had these little white flowers in her hair though.”

“Miranne was always fond of night lilies. They only grow in a couple spots here in the forest. I’ll have to show you where one of these days. Your father would always bring her as many as he could find.” Roeal smiled sadly. “I never saw two people dote on each other as much as those two. Then you girls came along.”

“How come we never met you when we were little?”

“My husband got sent to the outpost in Kunark shortly after your sister was born. We were there for quite a few years until he was killed. Your mother sent me a letter telling me about you, but I never heard from her again.”

“Mirtoba says we saw the accident, but I don’t remember it.”

“Must have been hard for the both of you, but I imagine hardest for her.”

“Why do you say that?”

“She was still much a child, probably about the age you are now, and she had the two of you to take care of. Things like that age a person ahead of their time.”

They were silent for a moment, the stars were beginning to peak through the highest branches above them.

“I’ll probably never know why she left.” Leptictis mused.

“I imagine she felt lost. You were old enough to start your training, so you were being cared for by the druids. She’d lost the focus in her life in taking care of you. I’ve seen situations like it before. A person spends so much time concerned about everything but themselves they don’t know what to do or where to go if that changes.”

“Still doesn’t excuse her abandoning me.”

“Don’t you go blaming her forever. She probably felt she had no one to go to for help. People on the outside can only sympathize. Unless a person has lived through something like the two of you, they’ll never fully understand.”

Leptictis was quiet a moment.

“Isn’t Lycheas the same age as Mirt?”

“He’s a little older. He was born before we went to Kunark.”

“He’s never mentioned it.”
“Lycheas came down with a strange fever, and was very sickly for the first two years we were there. He doesn’t remember too much. I sent him and his sister back here to stay with my brother when things started to look bad over there.”

“So, he and Mirt might have met before? During their early training?”

“It’s possible, but I think your sister was probably too busy to notice much of anything in those days. Lycheas’ sickness held him back quite a few years as well.”

“He must be a fast learner then.”

“That he is, at most things.” Roeal smiled warmly. “And it’s time for us to get some sleep. I believe you have a long day tomorrow.”

Leptictis groaned. Sallacious and Kalutam had a rigorous practice schedule laid out for her before she was tested again. It was something she wasn’t looking forward to.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
The next morning we made our way towards the docks. I sent Lycheas into the tavern to collect some beer, ale, whatever he could find, while I bought a couple fishing poles. We decided on a spot along the shore a short distance off, to avoid disturbing the regulars at their stations. It was soon apparent that Lycheas hadn’t done much fishing either.

“You really don’t get out much do you?”

“My uncle took me to Felwithe a few times on fishing trips, but he gave up. I was a very stubborn little boy.”

“Your uncle?”

“Mother sent Arellat and I back to live with him when things in Kunark started to heat up again.”

“You lived at the Fironia Vie outpost? And here I thought you’d never been out of the forest before.” I prodded gently.

“I don’t remember too much of growing up there. Mother said I came down with a strange fever shortly after we arrived and was sick for quite a while. Set me back quite a few years on my training as well.”

“But you’re about on the same level there as I am.”

“I studied hard and learned fast. It was quite motivating to be much older than all the other initiates around me.”

I had to wonder how it was we had never met each other back then. Then I had to ask myself why this had never occurred to me before. It took me a moment to realize I’d been thinking aloud.

“Well, you would have been a few levels ahead of me. I doubt we would have run into each other that much. I was too deep into going through my training as fast as they would allow, I don’t think I noticed much of anything.”

“I probably wouldn’t have noticed you even if you hit me over the head back then. It’s hard to keep up with your training and raise your little sister at the same time.”

“What happened to your parents?” He asked gently.

I figured I’d had just enough beer to talk about it, with only a little prying.

“I was ten when Lepti was born. She was sort of a surprise, and a difficult birth for my mother. I don’t think she ever fully recovered from it.”

I was glad Lycheas was simply letting me ramble through all of this.
“Anyway, when Lepti was five, my father was given some mission on Antonica, just a short little errand actually, so mother decided to go with him. It was only supposed to take a few days. I remember they argued quite a bit the day before they were supposed to leave. Mother didn’t know if she was up to porting them, even if he hadn’t had the same aversion as I do, but he wasn’t keen on them taking the boats either. He wanted to see if someone else could take them over, but mother insisted. It was one of the few times I wished he hadn’t given in. But he always did.”

I paused a moment feeling a tug on my line, but it slacked. Stupid fish eating the bait and getting away.

“We went with them to the docks, and sat watching the boat until we almost couldn’t see it. The weather wasn’t bad, but it didn’t look promising. The storm hit suddenly, with no warning. I sat there with Lepti huddled against me as we watched the boat sink. There were no survivors.”

I took a long swallow from my bottle, and sat looking blankly out across the water. Lycheas moved closer and put an arm around me. We sat there in silence for a while.

“Why are we sitting here fishing again?” He asked quietly.

“The act of fishing isn’t about catching them.” I answered.

“Ok. I’ll just go with that, even though I don’t understand it.”

“You will eventually.”

“So, what should we do tomorrow?”

“What’s left on the list? Since our little vacation turned into a working holiday for everyone else.”

“There was this woman, I can’t remember her name, who suggested we hunt for silks rather than buy them.”

I laughed as he continued.

“The last things on the list will be easier to find at the bazaar. Besides, we can get you a new weapon if you want, and spend a couple days on Luclin.”

“That sounds good.”

The pole jerked in my hand again, this little fish wasn’t getting away.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
Sallacious, Kalutam and Leptictis were all resting at the bottom of one of the lifts. They’d spent the greater part of the last few days trying to help her with her weapon skills, with little success. Sallacious shared an exhausted grimace with Kalutam as they tried to drown out her moans over all the bruises she would have the next day.

“I don’t think this was one of our better ideas.” Sallacious muttered. Kalutam simply nodded in agreement.

Looking back on what was to come next, Sallacious counted closing his eyes for a moment the next mistake of the day. If he had seen who was approaching from behind Leptictis, he would have gotten them all up and moving before anything started.

“Babysitting again Sall?” A feminine voice drawled.

He opened his eyes to see Triahl looking down on their little group. She certainly wasn’t a welcome addition to the day. For what ever reasons, Leptictis hated her with the same passion most in the city had for the neighboring orcs. She had often come out of her lessons in the guild hall fuming over the ‘blonde snippy snooty’ older girl that assisted the masters occasionally. Leptictis jumped to her feet.

“We’re not babies!” She fumed.

“I don’t remember addressing you.” Triahl dismissed her as someone would an annoying insect.

“What do you want?” Sallacious grumbled.

“I haven’t seen you in a while Sall. It’s like you’ve been avoiding me.”

“You weren’t invited and you aren’t wanted here.” Leptictis spat back.

“I see you never learned any manners, your mother must be so very disappointed in you.”

“How dare you talk about my mother!” Leptictis shoved the older girl a few steps back.

“You’re just as deranged as your sister is. The two of you shouldn’t be allowed in the city.”

Sallacious and Kalutam managed to restrain Leptictis, who it seemed had lost all speech functions and simply wanted to claw the face off the older girl.

“Lepti! Calm down and stop acting like a child.” Sallacious yelled in her ear.

She stopped struggling a moment in shock, then turned her anger on him.

“She insults Kalutam, she insults my mother and my sister…and you’re telling me to calm down? That I’m acting like a child?” She shook them both free, her hand connecting solidly with the side of his face. “You two deserve each other!” She screamed before running off.

“I see the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Sallacious turned and paled, standing behind him were Lycheas and Mirtoba. His breath caught in his throat as she moved forward, but her eyes were on Triahl.

“You say or do anything towards my sister again, and I will have words with you and your parents.” Mirtoba’s voice was low and cold. She said nothing more as she dropped her packs and headed after her sister. Triahl made a hasty exit from the area.

“Well boys, we might as well make ourselves comfortable. This will probably take a while.” Lycheas motioned for them to join him as he took a seat near the lift.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
We had survived our trip to the bazaar, not something I wanted to do again any time soon. Strangely enough, I was actually looking forward to being home again. Lycheas had devised a system for using the portal stones that was actually working quite well. He’d decided it was best for him to go through first, and cast healing on me the minute I appeared. It certainly made things more bearable, but I don’t think there was much anyone could have done for my headache when we finally arrived in Faydark after all the stones in between. Heading towards the first lift, I paused thinking I heard Lepti’s voice drifting over the hill from the next. I quickened my pace, not waiting to see if he followed me.

Her two friends were restraining her, another girl stood off to one side. It seemed as if they had everything under control, so I waited before sticking my nose in. I listened as Sallacious yelled at her to calm down, and felt sorry for him a little that he’d chosen the wrong words. Watching Lepti run off into the forest, I sighed, my hopes for a quiet, relaxing homecoming shattered.

“I see the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” Lycheas said beside me.

The look on Sallacious’ face was priceless. I’m sure he half expected me to come after him like a rabid wolf, but Lepti had punished the poor boy enough. I directed my attention to the girl. She had long blonde hair, pale blue eyes, and this somewhat snotty look on her face. I made my way towards her.

“You say or do anything towards my sister again, and I will have words with you and your parents.” I said, my voice deathly calm. Dropping my packs to the ground, I headed off to find Leptictis.

She was easy to track down, she’d never really run far when she threw a fit as a child. I heard her before I saw her, great racking sobs echoing through the trees. This would certainly take a while to repair. I sat next to her, and held her as she cried. I kept silent, knowing she’d tell me everything soon.

**********************************

Lycheas studied the two boys a moment. Perhaps introducing them to Leptictis had been a bad idea. He was surprised when Kalutam spoke.

“We should have just let Lepti beat that monster to a pulp.” He said calmly.

“That would have gotten us in more trouble. It’s all my fault anyways.” Sallacious muttered, his shoulders slumped.

Lycheas sat quietly while the two talked.

“How is it your fault what Triahl did to our Lepti?”

“If I hadn’t closed my eyes for that moment, I would have seen her coming and gotten us away before she’d had a chance to say anything.”

“You’re forgetting I was sitting here too. I was just too tired to pay attention.”

“Boys, you both look exhausted. I don’t think either of you are liable for anything that happened.” Lycheas interjected.

Sallacious gave him a look like a rabbit caught in a trap.

“Well, ok, you did say the wrong thing back there, but all that did was divert Lepti’s anger from the original target. If anything that was your only mistake.”

A figure was running towards them, but they relaxed when it turned out to be neither Leptictis or Mirtoba.

“Kalutam! You’ve got to tell me what happened! Triahl came into the bunk house looking like she’d just been grabbed by a giant skeleton.” A young girl flopped down next to them. She took a look at Lycheas. “Who’s your friend?”

“This is Lycheas, one of our trainers.” Kalutam said shyly.

“I’m Drella. One of Lepti’s new friends. So, spill already!”

Kalutam slowly started retelling the events from earlier, Drella hanging on every word.

“And her sister just happened to show up right then? This is just too great. Triahl finally brought down a notch or two. So, what are the three of you doing sitting here?”

Lycheas could see how this girl and Lepti got along, neither of them stopped talking for long.

“We’re waiting for Mirtoba and Leptictis to return.” He told her.

“Oh. But why are you sitting here on the ground?”

“I’ve learned it’s best to not stray too far away in situations like this.” Lycheas smiled.

“Can I wait with you? I want to make sure Lepti’s ok.”

“Certainly.”

I R NUCKING FUTS!

Yes, I know...I know what you always say - You trap, you kill, you eat - that's what a good spider does.
You trap...you kill...you eat....
