Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
I spent a few lazy days after the harvest festival. The energy just wasn't in me to do much of anything. We still hadn't told Lepti what was wrong, and thankfully she was busy with her lessons to notice much. Lycheas was still over-protective as usuall, but it didn't seem as annoying as before. I must be getting soft in my old age.

Mama Roe had recently started stopping by at mid-day to visit me. I suspected is was a family consipracy to keep an eye on me, but I didn't say anything about it. Besides, it meant I didn't have to fix myself food. Everyone needs some mothering every now and then.

We generally sat around chatting about nothing in particular. Today was the same as the last two, except it seemed she was going to stay untill Lycheas returned. So we spent the afternoon getting dinner ready.

"So, they come up with a plan yet?"

"Not that I've been told."

She asked me that every day...and the answer was still the same. Not, the masters didn't know what they were going to do with me. No I had no idea when they would come up with anything. I could only bide my time and wait to see what news Lycheas would bring home with him every evening.

"Well, they better get in gear soon. We have a wedding to plan." She gave me a smile before getting up to futz with the oven again.

I smiled and said nothing, turning back to the window to watch the daily nothingness go by in our quiet little corner of the city. Soon, a faint whistle came to my ears with the soft thud of footsteps signaling Lycheas' approach. I got up to great him at the door, hoping he'd have some news for us today.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

Lycheas wrapped me in a warm hug as he stepped through the door. It slowly dawned on me that whatever strength I’d had recently was coming from him…my own slowly fading as the days passed. His lips brushed my forehead briefly before he released me and headed off to change. I turned to the kitchen to help Mama Roe finish up dinner.

“Mama, what are you doing here?” He asked upon his return.

“I’m fixing dinner. What does it look like boy?” she smiled. “Little Lepti is off on a camping trip tonight, some part of her training, and I really do hate to cook for just myself.”

Shaking his head, he poured a mug of ale and crashed into a chair at the table.

 “Long day?” I asked.

“We got a batch of new kids in today, and I had the pleasure of being in charge of them all day.”

I wanted to ask if anything else had been decided, but held myself in check. If there was any news he would certainly not keep it from me. He better not…if he hoped to remain in one piece.

“Would have been home sooner, but they requested my presence for a meeting.” He paused and took another swig of ale.

“Oh, for the…Don’t keep us waiting son. Be it good news or not?” Mama Roe sounded a little more than irritated.

“I don’t know, and they don’t know. The only option they could think of would be to head to the library up in Knowledge and just sit and go through books until we find something that fits.” He was avoiding looking at either of us.

“It’s a start at least.” I said quietly.

“But do we have that much time?” Lycheas’ voice sounded strained.

“I’d rather waste away searching through books than sitting here doing nothing every day.” I wished I hadn’t said that, watching his face turn a sickly pale color. “I’m sorry, I’m just tired of sitting here getting nowhere.” I tried to smile, but it didn’t quite work.

He got up and came over to me, lightly resting his hand on mine. I couldn’t look up, feeling a slight burning slowly starting in my eyes, knowing I’d start crying if I wasn’t careful.

“Why don’t you go rest Mirt, I can finish up here.” He said gently.

“Why don’t you both get out of here and let me cook?” Mama Roe prodded, a warm grin on her face.

 ”We get the hint Mama.”

Lycheas led me towards the door and the cool evening outside. He put his arms around me as we sat on the steps, and it seemed neither of us wished to voice the thoughts roaming around our brains. I tried to relax and just enjoy the moment, but it soon turned into a struggle with myself. He was right, did we really have that much time left to figure things out?

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

It took a couple days to make ready, and come up with a suitable excuse to tell Lepti why Lycheas and I had to leave. I did not like having to deceive her, but it would do little good to have her make herself sick by worrying about me so much. Thankfully things had remained quiet and she had no clue what was going on. Or it could have been she did and never mentioned anything, but it made me feel better to believe she didn’t know.

The masters sent us off with letters of introduction for the scholars at the library, and the hopes that something would be discovered. Lycheas seemed to wear a constant frown as I had decided to travel in my armor, despite the extra weight it placed upon me.

“I am not going anywhere unprotected. And you can’t always be there or guarantee something may not go wrong, especially if we have to leave and search for answers in other lands.” I tried not to sound too snippy.

“I know that, but I don’t have to like how exhausted it will make you.” He grumped.

“Oh, you’ll be carrying all the packs and other gear. I think I’ll do fine.” I tried to smile.

That seemed to help a little, as he shook his head with a rueful smile. It wouldn’t be a good sign if we were fed up with each other before we ever got going. Master Trueshot had asked me once more if I knew what Tunare had meant when she said to remember what someone had said. I knew what she had meant, but it made me sick to think of it, and even more so to try and tell anyone just then. It would have to wait until we found someone willing to help us.

I gathered my swords as  Lycheas got our packs together and we set off for the book. I was certainly not looking forward to porting in my current condition, but I had little choice if I wanted it all to end sooner and in any positive way.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

It had been two days since we had entered the Plane of Knowledge. My entrance had been less than stellar..blacking out the moment my feet touched the ground. Lycheas, bless him, had ended up carrying me as well. When I finally woke the next day, I had to promise to at least not wear my armor until we left..and if we were simply going home I was to leave it off. I couldn’t fault him that one.

He had gone to the library without me, since I was obviously in no condition to even get out of bed. So far, our luck wasn’t holding. He was still trying to find someone kind enough to spend some time with us figuring things out…if we could. He’d grumbled about “uppity learned ones” all morning while getting ready.

I waited a while until I was sure he was gone before forcing myself out of bed. While my mind was ready, it was apparent my body wasn’t. It took close to an hour to get myself into a sitting position on the edge of the bed. I gritted my teeth and struggled to my feet. I had to brace myself against the wall as a wave of dizziness washed over me, threatening to bring down another crushing darkness. I don’t really know how I managed to make it over to the small wash stand. Standing there, panting slightly, I glanced at myself in the small mirror above the basin. I didn’t even recognize the face looking back at me.

This person had the same color hair, the same shape of face, but those eyes couldn’t be mine. They were dark, empty eyes and I couldn’t fathom that they were sitting there in my head. I had never felt so angry and lost as I did right then. Something welled up from deep within, and whatever that anger fueled, I was dressed and ready in a fraction of the time it had taken me to get out of bed. Tucking a few coins in my belt pouch, my hand brushed the little figurine, and for a brief moment I felt normal again. Whatever normal might be.

As unhealthy as it might have been, I held on to that anger, since it seemed to be the only thing keeping me on my feet at the moment. It did help in getting through the crowds of people, as whatever look was upon my face made them move out of my way in a hurry. I think I got a few interesting looks from a small group of dark elves, but I didn’t stick around to investigate. Standing outside the massive library, I paused…how in the world did I expect to find Lycheas?

That question answered itself as he soon came out of a small side door, accompanied by a little gnome, shorter than others I had happened to meet. In true form, Lycheas came rushing over.

“Mirt! What are you doing?”

“I decided to take a walk.”

“We were coming to you.” I sensed the ‘damn fool woman’ he left out.

“Pardon sir, but I believe we should get the lady inside. And a nice cup of tea.” The gnome gave me a guarded smile. “Yes, let us head to my study.”

Lycheas clamped his lips together as we followed the gnome. I gritted my teeth and didn’t take the arm he offered, determined to get their under my own power. It was going to be a long day.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story
The study the gnome led us to was well lit and rather cheerful looking, despite the fact it had no windows. The desk, if there actually was one, was hidden under a mound of papers and scrolls that looked like they would give way at any moment. He directed us to two small stools and busied himself with a kettle over the small stove in the corner.

"I guess I should introduce myself. I am Tookah." He directed another one of those strange guarded smiles at me.

"Mirtoba."

"I'm not very good at remembering names right away...so you'll most likely have to remind me from time to time." Taking his seat behind the mound of papers, he studied me for a moment. "My boy, if you don't mind, I think I'd like a word with the young lady alone for just a moment."

Lycheas stiffened briefly before leaving the room. I had to cover my mouth to keep from grinning.

"I hope I did not offend."

"He'll get over it."

"He is a rather protective sort, isn't he."

"Yes."

We were silent a moment...since I had no idea what he expected from me.

"There certainly is something in and around you...a couple somethings to be exact. But I am afraid my skills are not very good in that area. I just agreed to help the young man as he looked rather dejected wandering around the library. And a change of pace is good for my old head every now and then."

I smiled, waiting for him to continue.

"I will have to do some calling in of favors, but I believe I know one that might help....if you have no objections to talking with a dark one. I know it's a rather forced peace up here at times."

"I'll talk with anyone that could possibly help."

"And the young man?"

"He doesn't have much choice in the matter."

Tookah gave me a genuine smile at that one. He was a rather likeable gnome...but then I had yet to meet one that wasn't.

"Ah, tea is almost ready. I'll go let your friend back in."

A moody...make that very moody...Lycheas came back into the room, and sat fuming while Tookah prepared the tea for us. After everyone had a steaming mug before them, he continued.

"I apologize if I offended you earlier son, I spend too much time with just books and bits of paper I can forget how to behave around people."

Lycheas nodded, and relaxed just a little.

"As I was talking with the young lady here, and I think I mentioned to you earlier, I myself do not know much about what ails her. However, I have a few people around here that are in debt to me a favor or two, and I will call on them and see where that gets us. Things will certainly go much easier for you with an inside friend, so to speak."

He paused and took a sip.

"Now, the first person that comes to mind is a dark one, rather cantankerous old elf, but he is good at what he does. And knows quite a bit about the ancient enchantments the rest of us have forgotten about. I'm only telling you so you won't be suprised when you meet him. Now, why don't you tell me the story so I'll have something to go on with the others."

For the better part of the afternoon, and through many cups of tea, I told him an abriviated version of events. Lycheas helped out from time to time when my brain and tounge became tired. Just talking seemed to be expending more energy than I had to give. I have no idea if I looked it, but it felt like the shadows under my eyes were getting larger and heavier with each passing moment.

"Well, that will certainly give me enough to go on. I'm sure it's more that enough to pique a few intrests. Now, you take her back and put her in bed and don't let her get up for a while." I think Lycheas blushed into his mug at that one. "I will send a messenger...or I might come myself, could use the exercise...to you at the inn when I have some news for you."

This time I took the arm Lycheas offered, otherwise I probably wouldn't have made it up off the stool. We thanked our newfound friend, and slowly made our way from the library. I could sense that Lycheas was still miffed at me for even leaving the room today, but if all I did was lay around waiting, I'd go crazier than I already was.

"I know I look dreadful, and I know you're angry with me because I came up here on my own...but are you going to be moodier than me the whole time?"

Lycheas tightened his grip around my waist.

"I'm sorry...I just worry about you. And you are looking worse than before. I just don't want you to over-do it too much."

"I know, and I am trying. I just hate doing nothing but lie in bed all day long. But now I have orders from a gnome to do just that."

"So you'll listen to a gnome but not me?"

"Of course, I'm not in love with the gnome."

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

It was three days after our conference with Tookah before we had any word from him. He even came to the inn to tell us himself.

“Well, he did agree to see you…briefly.”

“Should have expected that from a dark elf.’ Lycheas muttered.

“Lycheas, an attitude such as that will not help us at all.” I reminded him yet again. “When are we meeting him and where?”

“He said I was to bring you to the practice grounds tomorrow evening. I will come to collect the two of you a bit early. Sevter is not one to be kept waiting.” Tookah said with one of his lopsided smiles. “Rest up, you’ll probably need it tomorrow.”

I sighed and leaned back against the pillows as Lycheas saw Tookah to the door. Tomorrow was certainly going to be an interesting day.

****************************
I slept until midday. Or rather, I tried to. Strange dreams had kept waking me through the night, but I couldn’t remember what any of them were about. Lycheas had slept through the entire night as if I wasn’t there, so I guess they weren’t anything too awful. They just left me with an uneasy feeling I wasn’t able to shake off.

We had yet another small disagreement as I wanted to be up and moving having spent the last three days confined to bed…and of course Lycheas felt I shouldn’t do anything until Tookah came to collect us. He didn’t win, but it really wasn’t much of a victory. I managed to get up on my own and get dressed, but then had to lie back down. Something told me to search for that dark anger deep within to keep me going, but the sickening unease that came directly after that thought kept me from it. This battle within was getting worse, and I wasn’t sure how much longer I could keep on top of it.

Tookah arrived late in the evening, but kept assuring us that we would still be early for the meeting. Lycheas stayed close to my side, but did not offer any assistance unless I asked. We followed him to the “less attractive side of Knowledge” as he called it. Even in this supposed peaceful place things were still kept separate. But one must assume the gods know what they’re doing.

“Ah, there he is.” Tookah directed us behind a row of buildings.

“Right on time Scholar Tookah.” Sevter’s voice was deep and soft, the words might have gone unheard to other’s ears.

I felt like a piece of jewelry on display under the gaze of his black eyes, and so decided to return the favor. He was only slightly taller than Lycheas, and though he did not look very old, it was something you could simply sense. Arrogance radiated from him, much like a bad odor. His hair must have once been black, but now appeared more like polished pewter. A faint grin flashed briefly upon his face as we studied each other, but vanished as quickly as it came.

“I have heard your story from Tookah, but there is still much to be told is there not?” His eyes never left mine.

“There is more. I will not tell it until the proper time and place.” I was amazed I kept my voice as steady as it was.

“You do not trust me.”

“I trust no one as far as this is concerned.”

His eyes flicked towards Lycheas, who stood staring blankly ahead at nothing in particular.

"Such practice is indeed wise.” Sevter smiled.

“Uncle! There you are.”

The four of us turned, surprised at the sudden interruption. A young man came towards us. He was certainly an attractive specimen, even for a dark elf. I dismissed those thoughts quickly, letting the moment’s distraction fade to nothing.

“My boy, if you would wait for me in the study.” Sevter dismissed him with a small wave.

“Well Sevter….” Tookah left the thought unfinished.

“Yes, yes. Back to the matter at hand. I can sense only a tiny bit of what might lie within. Without the incantation used, I am not of much use.” He paused, eyes drilling into me yet again. “When the lady decides to tell me, I will see what I can do. Until then, we’re simply wasting each other’s time.”

“You ask too much Sevter.” Tookah grumbled.

“It is not asking too much to ask for the full truth of the matter Tookah.”

“By giving anyone the incantation, I give them power over myself. I hope you all understand my hesitation for the moment.” My voice sounded tired and weak.

“Your hesitation may kill you, child of light.”

“I no longer belong to the light, and I fully understand the consequences of my actions.”

I didn’t really know where the words came from, but they were already out. And that effectively ended the conversation…so did me turning my back to the three of them and slowly making my way towards the inn.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

“Uncle, what was your business with them?”

Sevter turned to the young man who had come up behind him, only slightly annoyed.

“I thought I told you to wait for me in my study boy.”

“Since when have you known me to actually do what I was told.”

“Rilet, your habits will get you killed one day.”

The young man simply shrugged and waited for his uncle to continue.

“The young lady bears a taint around her, and within her. Very old magic that many believe to be forgotten. Tookah brought her to me because he assumed I might be interested in helping.”

“And are you going to help?”

“I’m still thinking about it. She doesn’t feel like trusting anyone with the knowledge one would need to find the right answers.”

“Then ask the man that was with her.”

“She has not even told him, that much I am certain of. She has been battling whatever it is for quite some time now. It is amazing she is still going actually.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Because anyone else would have been totally consumed by it and dead long before this point. There is perhaps some divine intervention going on, I sensed something else. That could be contributing to her life span, but she truly does not have much time left.”

“Shame, she was attractive, even for a light skin.”

“Do you think of nothing else?”

Rilet’s eyes flashed, and the only answer Sevter received was a devious grin.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

Lycheas had ended up carrying me back to the inn that evening, after they caught up with me. It didn’t take them long considering someone suffering the effects of being snared could move faster than I. He had muttered in my ear about no arguments this time, and I had been too tired to care. Tookah said he would be back with more news the next day, but I was resolved to get back to the library myself and see about meeting Sevter once again. As long as we did not leave the Plane of Knowledge, I could entrust him with the incantation that vile man had used on me….at least that was how I tried to justify it to myself.

He had been right. There wasn’t much time left for me to get comfortable with the idea, not if I wanted this all to end in a way that meant I benefited. My choices were madness and death, or life. At times, death seemed like such a wonderful release, but those around me wouldn’t like that approach. Not to mention all the other close calls from my haphazard youth I had survived. How could I simply let myself go in such a way? The time was not right, not just yet.

For the first time in a long while, I woke before Lycheas. I slowly eased myself from the bed, trying not to wake him, but didn’t succeed.

“Mirt, love, what are you doing?”

“I am going to the library.”

“Tookah said he would come with news sometime today.”

“I cannot afford to wait any longer.”

“Mirtoba, you can barely…”

“Lycheas, please.” I pleaded. “Scholar Sevter spoke the truth. I don’t have much time left to dally around any longer. I could see it in his eyes, he seemed amazed I was still alive. We have to go, and we have to go now.”

He came around the bed and wrapped his arms around me.

“That’s all you ever had to say love.”

“Sorry, I’m just so tired…and it’s so hard to think straight anymore.”

“Um…could we at least eat something before we go?” He looked down at me with a boyish grin.

“Yes, we can eat before we go.” I sighed…men and their stomachs.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

After a light breakfast, I really hadn’t been all that hungry the past few days, Lycheas escorted me to the library. He left me at a small table in the middle of some shelves that looked like no one had touched the books on them for a long time. While I waited for him to return with Tookah, my eyes scanned what titles were actually there. The volume that caught my eye had none though. It was bound in a dark, red stained leather, and for some reason made the unease deep within worse. Clinging to the shelves I made my way over to it. After taking it from the shelf I slid to the floor and sat slowly flipping through the pages.

Much of the text was faded and parts were smudged, but it was still readable for the most part. I wished my dark speech wasn’t so rusty, but I managed to figure out most of it. The images in the book were enough to turn most people’s stomachs. Halfway through I paused, everything around me ceased to exist. On the page before me was an image I knew all to well, and the words I heard over and over in my darkest dreams. I barely noticed Lycheas approaching from behind.

“Find Sevter.” There was no emotion in the voice that came from within me.

“Mirt?” Lycheas’ knelt, concern on his face. Tookah hovered behind him.

“Tell the dark one…”

“Ah, there you are Tookah. Tell me what?” the soft arrogant voice came from behind.

“The beginning of the end.” I rose slowly and presented the book to Sevter.

He gave me a questioning look and began to read.

“Well, that certainly explains things now doesn’t it.” He studied me a moment. “This gives me somewhere to start. Return tomorrow and we shall talk.”

With that he turned and left us. Lycheas turned to me and the only answer I had was a slight shrug.

“Hmm. Well, why don’t we have some tea and rest a moment before you head back.” Tookah smiled warmly.

*************************************

“Uncle, are you going to be here all night?”

Sevter didn’t look up from the many books and scrolls that covered his desk.

“Uncle?”

“I’m busy Rilet, what do you want?”

“I was just seeing if you would be here all night, I’d have some food sent in.”

“No time to eat. This is a most interesting case, and thanks to gnomes and stupid elves I have to come up with a miracle overnight. If there was only time to study this more.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

Sevter actually stopped and looked up at the young man this time.

“I do know how to read and write uncle, you taught me remember?”

“It was a miracle you even learned that.” He handed Rilet the book Mirtoba had found earlier. “Read this page and the following one. Then you can pick something off the pile here and find any references about it as you possibly can.”

Rilet took the book and a chair near the door. A few minutes later he rose and returned the book to the desk.

“That’s just…well…it’s rather disgusting to tell you the truth. And I see now why you’re surprised she’s still alive uncle.”

“Yes….but in everything I have found thus far states that the curse was never used and no one ever believed it actually would work.”

“Either that or no one was ever around to record it when it did.” Rilet paused a moment. “I’ll be right back. You may be able to go without food, but I’m starving.”

Sevter smiled and shook his head, turning his attention back to the scroll in front of him. So far the ancient tomes were not being very helpful, and if he didn’t find something soon, the only specimen he could study would be dead.

“I hope you gods are happy…can’t ever not meddle in things.” He muttered to the empty room.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

Tookah waited until he saw the young elf leave before making his way to Sevter’s study. He wanted some answers for himself, feeling a little bit of a connection with the young wood elves. Something he had missed out on…or rather ignored…for a great deal of his life. It might have been too late to go back, but that didn’t mean he had to keep going forward in the same ways as before.

He quietly knocked on the doorframe.

“Rilet, you don’t have to knock.” Sevter didn’t look up from his desk.

“My mother always told me it was bad manners not to.” Tookah smiled.

“Oh….it’s you.” Sevter paused and looked up. “What do you want?” His tone was impatient.

“I would like to know what you have discovered.”

“Read that.” The dark elf thrust his chin towards the book Mirtoba had found earlier.

Tookah quietly moved a stool closer to the desk, the pile of books and scrolls too high to accomplish without. It surprised him that he managed to get the indicated book without starting an avalanche. Settling in, he started to read. Rilet had returned by the time he finished the few pages marked.

“Disturbing…isn’t it.” The young man said quietly.

“I don’t think that begins to describe it.”

“If you two aren’t going to…” Sevter began sternly.

“Calm down uncle, as soon as I have my food organized I will start reading again. Care to join me, my little friend?” He smiled at Tookah.

“Don’t mind if I do.” Tookah snatched a couple stray scrolls and made his way to the other side of the study.

“Just don’t get any food on those.” Sevter muttered.

“You should eat something uncle. You’ll be less grumpy that way.” Rilet winked at Tookah, who wisely kept quiet.

As the hours moved by, the three men slowly made their way through the pile of material Sevter had gathered. He would never admit it, but with Rilet and Tookah helping, things went by much faster than if he had been researching everything alone. Glancing out the window, the sky was beginning to lighten.

“No closer to finding an answer, and there is no time.”

“Is there finally something the great mage cannot solve?” Tookah mumbled wearily.

Sevter stood and smiled grimly, only shaking his head.

“With the dawning light, that which the darkness consumes shall once again be reborn.” Tookah stood and stretched.

It took a moment for his words to register with Sevter.

“What was that?” The dark elf turned quickly.

“A verse from some poem my mother always read to us. For some reason that’s the only line I can ever remember. Why?”

“Little fool, you may have just given me the answer.”

“I am no fool. And you’re welcome…I think.”

“Go tell your friends I should have an answer by the end of the day.” Sevter turned back towards the window.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

I didn’t have any desire to get out of bed the next day. Everything ached slightly and my muscles felt like mush. Even the little voice floating around my head that kept telling me to fight it was growing fainter. Not enough to make me totally give in right then, but the day was coming when I really wouldn’t care any longer.

Every time Lycheas looked at me, his face would darken and he would quickly turn away to hide it from me. These moments stirred the dark anger within, and sometimes I could swear it felt like a great snake readying itself to strike. If I tapped into it, I didn’t feel tired or weak….but that wasn’t enough to get rid of the feeling of being violated, of giving up who I was.

Lycheas returned from his morning outing to tell me Tookah had come by with some news.

“Sevter thinks he’ll have some answers for us by the end of the day.”

I nodded and smiled weakly. Lycheas looked a little lost…like he wanted to be there in the room…but then again not.

“Why don’t you go out for a bit?”

“But you…”

“I’ll be fine. It’s not like I can really go anywhere.”

“You’re sure?”

“I’m sure. You can bring me back a treat”

It was mid afternoon when Rilet woke up. It had been a long time since he had fallen asleep in his uncle’s study, but the chairs were just as uncomfortable as he remembered.

“It just might work.” Sevter mumbled.

“What….Ow.” Rilet stumbled over to the desk clutching his neck.

“So you’re awake.”

“Did you sleep at all uncle?”

“I can sleep when I’m dead.”

“Well, a night in that chair will do it for you.” The young man grumbled, attempting to stretch out the kinks.

Sevter gathered a handful of scrolls and stuffed them in a pack.

“Come. We must find Tookah.”

“Will there be food?”

“Do you think with anything other than your stomach?”

Rilet gave him an evil grin.

“Or that?” Sevter rolled his eyes and walked out the door, leaving a slightly shocked Rilet behind.

“I’d say no sleep has helped your sense of humor uncle.” Rilet said after he had recovered and caught up.

“There is nothing wrong with women and food…as long as you remember which other things around your happen to be more important.”

“But what could be more important than women and food?”

Sevter only shook his head as the two made their way through the library.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

“You honestly believe that this is the only way?” Tookah gave Sevter a questioning look.

“It’s the only solution I could find with the time we have…If there was more time, perhaps another way could be found.” The dark elf growled.

“No need to chew my ears off you old coot. I simply wanted to make sure.” Tookah replied.

“Will they go along with this?” Rillet asked.

“You make it sound like either of them have a choice in the matter.” The gnome sighed wearily. “Come, we best be going…And we will be going to her today.” His voice hardened towards the end and he gave Sevter a steady look.

The older mage simply nodded, and clenched his jaw a little tighter.

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

Lycheas had returned mid-afternoon with a nice fresh fruit pastry for me. Unfortunately it was a little rich so I couldn’t stand more than a few bites. My appetite had gone to hell anyways and I really hadn’t had the desire to eat all day. I dozed in and out for a while until a knock sounded at the door. Tookah and the others were waiting outside.

There was a slightly tense moment as Sevter made it clear he would speak to me alone, and true to form Lycheas did not wish to allow it. I guessed that Tookah smoothed things over, I was beyond caring, because I soon found myself alone with the dark mage. He stood there silently for a bit, studying me like a research specimen…which I figured I was to him.

“If you had sought help earlier, things would not be as they are.” His voice was cold.

“One cannot seek help when one knows not of what ails them if it shows no signs.” Man was I feeling overly wordy for some reason.

“That could be.” came his flippant reply.

If I hadn’t felt so worn out, I would have been tempted to slice him from gullet to that stupid condescending grin on his face.

“Never the less, I believe I may have found a solution. I doubt you or your over-protective friend are going to like it, but it’s what there is.”

I simply waited for him to continue.

“This curse of yours is indeed ancient. I’m surprised that whoever used it upon you actually knew it. And in all honestly, you should have been dead…or worse…quite some time ago.”

“Tunare said there was still hope.”

He could barely conceal his disgust at hearing her name. I took a small amount of satisfaction from that.

“Gods always meddle where they are least wanted, and that is all the time.”

“Some think that way, but I doubt you wish to discuss philosophy with someone such as me.” I tried to keep him on track. He gave me an odd look.

“Perhaps I have misjudged.”

“That could be.” I mirrored his earlier reply.

“But it would be hard to say if you were this interesting before the curse, or if it is merely some after effect.”

“I was in darkness long before this curse was thrust upon me, but that is neither her nor there. What is the answer you have found?” I was getting sick of this mindless banter.

“I should really thank Tookah, he pointed me in the direction we now must take. And this is not something to be tossed around with little care, because I risk as much as you.”

Now that did interest me.

“Both our lives will be on the line, little foolish one, and we won’t know if we managed to be successful or not until after it’s all over.”

He looked away for a moment as he removed the satchel from his shoulder and leaned against the dresser. When he looked back up at me, there was a hard, weary look to his face that hadn’t been there a moment before.

“None of them will like what I am now telling you, you probably won’t either. I certainly do not enjoy the idea.” He paused a moment. “Before I continue, I must have your word that you will go through with this. Or I shall take my leave of you now.”

“I have little choice but to go through with any solution. Death awaits me no matter what choice I make. But I can choose how I meet that death.” I attempted to sit up a little more in the bed with that last remark…I don’t think I succeeded all that well.

“You falter or hold back at any time and I will make certain that your death meets you sooner than you think.”

“As it should be. What must I do?”

“I would rather not tell this a million different times. The full plan will be revealed when everyone is gathered and ready to go. I have not yet decided on a proper location for this…experiment.”

" Lake of Ill Omen." I had no idea why those words just flew out of me.

“That is an interesting choice, to say the least.” His eyebrows lifted a fraction.

“It is peaceful by the waters edge, where the maiden awaits in her silent prison for the release that comes with the dawn.” It was an old poem, and I surprised myself by remembering the line.

“It is settled then. I shall await you below with the others. There is little need to bring much with you.” He left out the part that our futures would soon become more uncertain than ever before.

I did hear him muttering something about simple minded idiots and poetry as he closed the door.

By the Water's Edge

It is peaceful by the water's edge
Where the maiden waits in her silent prison
For the release that comes with the dawn

Long has her slumber been
Waiting in vain for a rescue
One that may never come to be

In darkness her love did cast her
In darkness is she doomed to stay
In darkness where no tears deem to fall

None can see her
None can feel her
None can know her

Alone she waits
Chained by one foolish moment
Lost in the swirling void of time

With the cold embrace of night
The answer floats on a chilling breeze
But many will fail to hear

With the dawning light
That which the darnkess consumes
Shall once again be reborn

Re: The Return - Mirtoba's Story

It took me a while to make my way out of bed and gather my armor. I did have to finally give in and briefly let the darkness free, otherwise I might have ended up falling down the stairs naked. While I’m sure quite a few patrons at the inn would have enjoyed it, it wasn’t high on my list of fun things to do. I made it downstairs to join the others, with only a few bruises from being so weak and clumsy.

Lycheas was fuming, Tookah looked old and tired, Rilet had this odd little grin plastered across his face, and Sevter just gave me a guarded glare.

“You may wish to hold it as you are until we reach our destination.” He nodded curtly.

I just shrugged and followed him out of the inn, the others falling in behind me.

“Uncle, you haven’t told us where we’re going.” Rilet called from behind me.

“We travel to the Iskar lands boy. It was her decision.”

“You’re crazier than I thought.” Rilet gave me an odd look. I simply grinned.

Lycheas and Rilet went through first when we reached the portal stone. I was the lucky one to go next…but this time it didn’t do much more than give me a slight headache when I appeared on the other side. Lycheas turned away for a moment, and I felt like I could have exploded on the spot. He forced a grin and turned back, but the empty sadness in his eyes rather ruined the effect. I stepped away and waited for Sevter and Tookah to appear.

“I will go through all the details when we finally get there.” He turned to me. “I suppose you already have a spot picked out?”

I nodded.

“Good. Lead the way then, little foolish one.”

I gave him an evil smile before heading off through the cavern where the book had left us. Generally, I would have worried about the dracnids scattered about outside, but something inside told me we wouldn’t have to worry about them…or anything else at the moment.

“No spiders today.” Tookah observed quietly.

“I think we’ll be safe from outside enemies for a while.” I replied coldly, leading them up the hill along the river’s edge.

Any other day, it would have been a nice little walk along the river to where the waters joined the large quiet lake. Though there were no clouds in the sky, the day felt suffocated by shadows. I stopped in the flat open area, looking out across the sparkling waters, wishing I could enjoy the view. Sevter cleared his throat.

“If this is the spot, then I shall explain everything fully.”

I turned, waiting for him to continue.

“This is most likely not the best of solutions, but it’s the only one I could come up with on such short notice. We all risk by being here, but the lady and I will be risking the most. The rest of you will most likely survive whatever might happen, the two of us will only survive if things go according to plan.”

Even the insects seemed shocked into silence. Sevter then addressed only me.

“I must turn the curse back upon you once more, and you must fully engage the darkness within. It must be fully unleashed, and then we will consume it. If we are not strong enough, it will of course consume us.” He turned to Lycheas and Rilet. “If the two of us fall, you must make certain neither survives. On this you cannot falter.”

“You want us to do what?” they both asked almost simultaneously.

“If we fail, you must kill us. Otherwise this plague of darkness will slowly destroy everything. It will take millennia to do so, but it will happen none the less.”

“What do you mean ‘we will consume’ the darkness?” I asked, though I had a small idea where he was going with that one.

“It will be bound to us. Which also means we will be bonded to each other.”

“What?” I expected an explosion from Lycheas, but this time it was Tookah. Lycheas just had this blank look on his face.

Sevter smiled sadly, the first emotion he had truly shown since we had first met.

“It is not a bonding in that sense. The dark tie that will hold us together will not be the same. Though I haven’t worked out fully what might happen if we do survive and they end up bonded. But this at least will give me time to work out something more permanent and keep her alive.”

“It also means neither of us will be able to draw on the full power this darkness holds.” It was a scary relief that washed over me as things started to make a little more sense.
